*Initial Breastfeeding Visit Information

At the initial lactation consultation.....

I will talk you through a handout titled
"Breastfeeding Guidelines in the First Couple Weeks" and
        "The Ideal Breastfeeding Session."
Click here to view and print the handout.

Another article on this website's medical library, called "Prenatal Class: Breastfeeding 101," reviews this same information in the form of videos and articles.

Also consider signing up for a 1 hour prenatal breastfeeding class at LPG.

The initial breastfeeding visit is scheduled for 1 hour, and follow up visits are 30 minutes.

  1. If it's your newborn's first visit to LPG, I will also do the elements of the Initial Newborn Check-up. Otherwise, I'll customize the visit based on your needs.
  2. I'll review the history of pregnancy, labor, delivery, newborn hospital stay, and your health history.
  3. I'll weigh, examine, and check your baby's jaundice.
  4. I'll follow up on problems and initiate the referral process if your baby needs more testing or to see a specialist.
  5. I'll assess how you position your baby and how your baby latches.
    • I'll do my best to help you achieve a comfortable latch.
    • I'll weigh your baby before and after a feeding to get a snap shot of how well your baby removes milk.
  6. I'll provide education to get you started on your breastfeeding journey.
    • There is SO much to cover and you're sleep deprived. I don't mean to overwhelm you.
    • Thus, I've developed all these resources for you to review later.
  7. I'll help you establish a feeding plan to get you through until our next visit.
  8. Together, we'll decide when to follow up, based on medical needs and based on the support you feel you need.
  9. It's impossible to cover everything, so you can click the titles below to access more stuff we'll try to go over at your visit.
