Breastmilk Supply and Demand

The Ideal Breastfeeding Set Up: Supply = Demand

Mom SUPPLIES the milk

  • Ideally, milk comes in before your baby loses more than 10% of birth weight.
  • Ideally, you make enough milk for your baby to gain 1oz per day by drinking just breastmilk.

Baby DEMANDs the milk

  • Ideally, your baby is able to remove enough milk from the breasts to gain 1oz per day.
  • Ideally, your baby will empty your breasts regularly. This will bring milk in, increase it, and maintain it.
So, if you SUPPLY enough milk and your baby can DEMAND it, just breasfeed away so supply and demand can work out naturally to equal each other.

Getting empty brings your milk in, increases your supply, & then maintains your supply for as long as you breastfeed (ideally).
