Radiology tests while breastfeeding

Diagnostic imaging (x-ray tests) while breastfeeding

The agents of concern can all be searched on LactMed or Hale's site. Gadolinium- OK to breastfeed! This contrast material is used in kidney MRIs. 
This word is similar, but not the same as radioactive gallium.   

Iodinated contrast is NOT radioactive, so it's OK to breastfeed!
This word is similar to many radioactive agent's names, so is often confused. 

" Radioactive" is the key word to watch for.
Breastfeeding will need to be interrupted for up to 3 weeks.
Examples of radioactive substances are:
  • gallium ( 67 Ga)
  • Iobenguane (I 123 or  I 131 )
  • Iodofiltic acid (I 123 )
  • Iodohippurate Sodium (I 123 , I 125 or I 131 )
